Jake Berent began reporting for Newschannel 3 in September of 2017. To say he’s excited to be in Southwestern Michigan might be the understatement of the century.
Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Jake spent a few weeks every summer at his family’s cottage on Saddle Lake just outside of Grand Junction. He remembers riding the pink ponies at the front of Meijer, trips to Cereal City and the Air Zoo, and the unbeatable taste of Sherman’s Ice Cream! (His favorite flavors are cookie dough and rainbow sherbert!)
Jake earned his bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media and his master’s degree in Journalism from DePaul University in Chicago. Weeks after graduation, Jake got his start at WAGM in Presque Isle, Maine covering news and sports in Northern Maine and Western New Brunswick.
Jake is back in the “Mighty Midwest,” as he likes to say, after spending the last two years in Huntsville, Ala. at WAFF-48. Some people think life moves a little slower in the South, but Jake begs to differ. While in Huntsville, Jake helped expose empty political promises from a Huntsville City Councilman facing re-election, grilled Senator Luther Strange over his suspicious appointment to the senate, and covered deadly tornadoes. His work has been broadcast and shared by local TV stations across the country and has also appeared on CNN.
A huge music fan, Bob Seger is Jake’s favorite artist of all time. He also collects vinyl and can play a few tunes on the harmonica. When it comes to sports, Jake is probably the biggest White Sox fan you’ll ever meet. He also loves Big Ten football. Since his alma mater hasn’t had a football team since the 1920’s, his allegiance is up for grabs!
Jake loves to tell stories and is always up for a good conversation, so be sure to say hi if you see him out and about!
