KENT, Ohio — The Western Michigan baseball team saw its 2023 season come to an end on Thursday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to No. 2 seed Central Michigan in an elimination game at the 2023 MAC Tournament. WMU finishes the season at 21-31 overall, while CMU advances to play in another elimination game on Friday afternoon.
Western Michigan had a few scoring opportunities in the early innings, but it was CMU who opened the scoring with a three-run third inning.
After the three-run frame, WMU starter Hayden Berg settled back into a groove, and ended up retiring the final seven batters he faced. In his first start of the season, the junior went a season-high six innings and limited Central Michigan to three runs, two of which were earned, on just two hits. Berg also piled up seven strikeouts, one shy of his career high.
The score remained 3-0 in favor of the Chippewas until the top of the seventh. Grady Mee led off the inning with a double, then scored the first WMU run of the day on a Cade Sullivan single. Gavin Doyle followed Sullivan’s single with a run-scoring double to trim the gap to one, 3-2.
CMU answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of unearned tallies to extend their lead back to three, 5-2.
Western Michigan managed to get one runner on in each of the last two innings, but did not get a runner beyond first base as the Chippewas held on for the victory.
