KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Power jumps happen as a baseball player gets older.
Consider KVCC shortstop Trenton Quartermaine, he had hit four home runs his entire life entering this season and he popped 11 this year alone.
"Really, it's just our coach. I came in, wasn't even a good hitter. He changed everybody's swing. This year we're rolling." Quartermaine said.
But as they say, the former Gull Lake star is no one-trick pony. He's got the other skills too, finishing a mere five points shy of the triple crown in MCCAA baseball.
"I'm just a tough out. I'd almost rather hit with two strikes. Just put the ball in play." Quartermaine said.
When you finished the regular season with a .465 average, 11 home runs and 53 runs batted in, it's safe to say you made the right choice on playing for KVCC.
"I wasn't ready for a 4-year out of high school. I wasn't even going to go play college baseball. Came here, and everything changed." Quartermaine said.
And while Quartermaine will take his talents to Ball State to play for the Cardinals next season, he says he'd like to accomplish a little more before he goes
"We talk about it all the time, Oklahoma is the end goal. Last year, I was the only freshman. Getting the experience of Regionals was cool, but this year we definitely want to win it. " Quartermaine said.
