Kwanzaa celebrates seven principles

Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018, was the first day of Kwanzaa, a seven-day cultural holiday celebrated mostly by people of African descent. Here is a look at the seven-day celebration, which is organized around seven principles, called the Nguzo Saba in Swahili, the native language for about 5 million people.

The Kwanzaa celebration focuses on a one principle each day: umoja (unity); kujichagulia (self determination); ujima (collective work and responsibility); ujamaa (cooperative economics); nia (purpose); kuumba (creativity) and imani (faith).
