Private snow removal companies scrambling as rock salt prices spike
SAGINAW COUNTY, Mich. --As mid-Michigan braces for Friday's winter storm, snow removal companies throughout the area are dealing with a salt shortage.
Any supply that does exist goes to a county’s commission before going to private companies who are now left scrambling to find salt.
Snow removal crews told NBC25/FOX66’s Sarah Jaeger that their trucks are loaded and they are ready to go.
However, if you have a company come and plow your driveway, you may be paying more for their services due to this salt shortage.
Aat the start of this winter season, the private companies were paying around $50 for a ton of salt, but that price has recently shot up to roughly $140 per ton.
So why is there a salt shortage?
Some people say areas down state are getting hit with more snow than normal, and others feel it’s due to a shortage of truckers to help with delivers.
