Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced a plan for investing $100 million in affordable housing Tuesday, July 27, 2021.

Representatives of Whitmer's office said in a written statement that the plan aimed to make affordable and safe housing more widely available throughout the state, using funds from the American Rescue Plan.

Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist and Gary Heidel, acting executive director of theMichigan State Housing Development Authority, both joined Whitmer in a news conference at 2 p.m.

According to a written statement from Whitmer's representatives, the plan recommended a $100 million investment of federal relief dollars from the American Rescue Plan into the Michigan Housing and Community Development Fund.

“This new housing investment will make a huge difference in the lives of Michiganders because a home is the foundation for long-term prosperity,” Whitmer said. "Investments in housing infrastructure are crucial as we build our economy back better from the pandemic and put Michigan back to work in thousands of good-paying jobs. This transformational investment will put Michiganders first by expanding access to affordable and attainable housing, helping close equity gaps, and supporting the development of vibrant communities across the state.”

In addition to federal relief dollars, the plan proposed using an additional $380 million in private funding.

“By leveraging additional private capital, we will be able to amplify this major investment to its fullest extent,” said Michigan State Housing Development Authority Acting Executive Director Gary Heidel. “The current magnitude of the housing shortage is so large that solving the supply problem will take significant coordination of both public and private resources, coordination that the Housing and Community Development Fund was designed to do.”

Whitmer's office said the plan was expected to produce 2,000 rental housing units and create 1,600 good-paying jobs.

An plan to allocate funding would be developed by theMichigan State Housing Development Authority. Representatives said it would be based on poverty rates, as well as economic and housing distress.
