W. Michigan boy foregoing birthday money, in hopes of saving shelter pets
COLOMA, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A little boy from right here in West Michigan is foregoing his birthday this year. Instead, giving his gifts to those in need.
Believe it or not, it was a TV commercial that inspired a 7-year-old from Coloma to pass up the chance for toys this year.
Instead, Matthew Witherspoon is asking for food for shelter pets, in hopes of saving them.
It's a birthday wish come true, and the big day isn't even here yet.
Matthew is a soon-to-be 8 year old, who has been worried for weeks about animals in need he's seen on TV.
"I got tired of always crying," he said.
So he decided to do something about it.
"With all of this, I can buy a cart full of dog food and cat food," he said, counting his birthday money.
Matthew is donating all his birthday money this year to a local animal shelter.
"They are basically suffering out there," he said.
With three weeks still to go until Matthew's birthday, on top of all that money, he's already also collected tons of toys and food.
"I am helping pets, even the pets I don't even know, but I still help them," he said.
An animal lover with a big heart, Matthew has donations coming in from as far away as Florida, Texas, and Colorado. And he's not stopping there.
He tells us he's hoping for more help between now and his big day.
"If they can bring us money and food and toys so when they get bored they can play with them," Matthew said.
Matthew's birthday is still about three weeks away--November 4th.
He'll be taking all his donations to the shelter that day.
