Zeeland man dies in multi-vehicle crash on I-196 in Ottawa County
A 27-year-old Zeeland, Michigan, man died Wednesday in a multi-car crash on Interstate 196 in Ottawa County.
The crash, near I-196's intersection with Michigan 6, happened just after noon, in the eastbound lanes, where several cars had crashed or slid off the roads.
When they arrived, Ottawa County Sheriff's Office deputies dispatched to the area found traffic at a stop in the eastbound lanes. Numerous vehicles had collided or slid off the roadway.
The fatal crash involved a pickup truck, a tractor-trailer and another vehicle, Ottawa Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Austin said in a written statement on the crash.
Sheriff's investigators said the tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound when he noticed the traffic ahead of him slowing down. The driver of the rig told police he slowed his semi to a near stop.
At that point, the driver of a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck also traveling eastbound but behind the semi attempted to slow or stop. However, the driver, Kyle Grant, lost control and slid sideways into the rear of the semi trailer. The Chevy pickup then bounced off the truck and hit a third vehicle.
Grant was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The semi driver, Vasiliy Konevitchenko, from London, Ontario, was uninjured.
The driver of the third vehicle, Amanda Witteveen, 30, was injured and transported to Metropolitan Hospital where she was treated and released. Also in the car with Witteveen, of West Olive, Michigan, were her two children, ages 2 years and 6 months.
I-196 was closed for several hours during the investigation and clean up. The crash remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.
