ST. JOSEPH TOWNSHIP — After St. Joseph Township Police reported Sunday morning that two people have been taken into custody following an investigation into the homicide of an active-duty soldier who was gunned down on New Year's Eve, Berrien County Jail records show the victim's wife is now being held on murder charges.
Berrien County Jail inmate search shows 22-year-old Kemia Nekenah Hassel was taken into custody and booked on Jan 12, 2019. Kemia Hassel was the wife of Tyrone Hassel III, who was shot and killed outside his family's St. Joseph Township home at approximately 11 p.m. on Dec. 31. Tyrone Hassel's obituary confirms the relationship held between the two.
Tyrone Hassel Jr., the father, said his son was leaving a family party on the evening he was killed to deliver his wife a plate of food.
"He came back out the house and somebody shot him," Hassel Jr. said. "I don't know if somebody followed him."
Hassel was found in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died.
The St. Joseph Township Police Department is not confirming names of suspects in the homicide and said more information will be released Monday.
Tyrone Hassel's funeral service was held Saturday at New Bethel Baptist Church in Benton Harbor.
