Multiple crashes on I-94 cause highway to shut down in Van Buren Co.

UPDATE (3:20 P.M.) - Westbound I-94 between Mattawan and Decatur has re-opened to all traffic, according to MDOT.

I-94 was closed for over three hours. Michigan State Police said more than two dozen cars sustained damage in the pileup.

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation is reporting multiple crashes along westbound I-94 between the Lawrence and Mattawan exits that has shut down all lanes of traffic.

The pileup began around 12:30 p.m. at the Lawrence exit on westbound I-94. Other incidents followed that closed westbound I-94 back to the Mattawan exit, a 14 mile stretch.

Van Buren County dispatch said they are dealing with multiple crashes in the area. Dispatch estimates around 40 cars are involved.

Michigan State Police is on scene and said there are minor injuries with none being life-threatening.

MSP is still dealing with moving cars off the highway at this time. No estimation as to when I-94 will re-open in the affected area.

Traffic is being re-routed off of I-94, and police asks drivers to avoid the area.
