KALAMAZOO, Mich. — New and expecting moms have always faced a lot of stress.
Now, during the Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, those moms have to digest even more, like school being canceled or stay-at-home orders.
In the wake of COVID-19, hospitals across the state have made changes to how they treat patients, like limiting in-person appointments.
In efforts to reduce the chances of exposure to the virus for pregnant women, health care providers encouraged virtual checkups until the 28, 36, and 39-week visits. Clinic visits were still allowed for in-person services only like ultrasounds and lab work.
"A lot is happening in the world right now, and for an expecting mom or a new mom, that can be extremely scary and stressful," Marissa Anderson, the owner of FIT4MOM, said.
FIT4MOM is a pre and post-natal fitness program that's focused on both the well-being and mental health of women.
"This is so much more than just a work out class," Anderson said. "This is a community made for moms, by moms, and a group to lean on during times of uncertainty."
Anderson said her team understands this can be a challenging time for children out of the classroom.
"We know that kids can tell something is different, and that too can be very stressful," Anderson said. " We want to provide a community for moms and kids and a place where everyone can virtually feel included, loved, and supported."
FIT4MOM provides weekly virtual playgroups for children, craft and song time and physical activities to get their bodies moving.
"This is such an uncertain time, and we want to be there for out clients and provide something they can hold onto and lean on during scary moments," Anderson said. "Pregnancy and new motherhood can be really isolating, so finding a community of women who can sit and chat about what’s going on in your life and knowing that people get it and aren’t judging you is really healthy."
During COVID-19, FIT4MOM was made available online to any mom in the greater West Michigan area.
