Police have identified the man found inside a burned out home Sunday on Wallace Avenue in Kalamazoo following a residential fire and said they're continuing to investigate the fire as suspicious.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Cpt. Brad Misner confirmed the man as 31-year-old Zachariah Hayes originally of the Iron Mountain area, who lived at the home on the 400 block of Wallace Avenue. Misner also said following an initial investigation, the fire is being investigated as suspicious.

KDPS said upon their response to the fire, officers encountered heavy smoke and flames along with hoarding issues and collapsing roof, therefore making the structure unsafe for officers to enter.

“When crews arrived, it was fully involved enough to damage two neighboring houses, so it was a very hot fire,” said KDPS Fire Lt. Tim Loso. “Plus, the debris that was around the house made firefighting difficult."

Anyone who may have more information on the incident are asked to call KDPS at (269) 488-8911 or Silent Observer (269) 343-2100.
