Once a soldier, always a soldier.

It's more than a mantra for Robert El Henicky of Portage. It's a way of life, and something that to this day can cause him to tear up.

“In a fox hole, everybody’s equal," Henicky said. "And, bullets don’t care.”

Henicky, on the other hand, can't help but care. Now in his retirement, he's offering his services free to veterans and active military personnel and their families.

Henicky served in the armed forces for more than four decades. He dropped out of high school at age 17 to join the Air Force and later worked for the Army. Henicky said much of his career was spent in social work with both civilians and military personnel, because he has a Master's degrees in management and social work.

In his retirement, Henicky owns Patriot Pointe Apartments where he rents homes to many military families. He also works as a certified social worker and therapist.

Between all his occupations and his pension, Henicky said he has the freedom to offer guidance to veterans and current military members free of charge.

Henicky said he can provide the listening ear that many current and former armed force members need.

"There is an element of adjustment to their changing circumstances," Henicky said. "For some of them, it's evident they need something. Anything that I can do to help, you know, you bet ya I'm gonna jump in and do it, but that's part of being a social worker."

If you'd like to contact Henicky for his services you can call him at (269) 323 -0682.
