GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Vandals spray painted "TRUMP" and "MAGA" on six headstones at a Jewish cemetery, Grand Rapids Sergeant John Wittkowski said in a written statement.
He said officers with the Grand Rapids Police Department began investigating the vandalism at Ahavas Achim Cemetery, at 1801 Garfield Ave NW, on Nov. 3, 2020, one day before Election Day.
The damage appeared relatively new.
Wittkowski said there were no suspects as of 8 p.m. Monday.
Other than the red spray paint, no other evidence was left at the scene.
The Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus released a statement about the vandalism:
“The desecration at Ahavas Israel is evocative of the febrile political atmosphere our country finds itself in right now. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Time and again, the President of the United States has sided with antisemites, white supremacists, racists, and bigots of all kinds. Now, our country is paying the price. Tomorrow, we will end it,” Noah Arbit, founder and chair of the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus, said.
