Two arrested after fleeing traffic stop; discarded firearm linked back to couple
PORTAGE, Mich. —
Two suspects are currently being lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on several charges after fleeing from a traffic stop in Portage Sunday afternoon, police said in a press release.
A 36-year-old Florida woman and a 29-year-old Vicksburg man were taken into custody near the 1400 block of East Osterhout Ave. after a resident contacted police to notify them that an unidentified vehicle was in her backyard near Portage Road and Lancelot Court.
Officials originally tried performing a traffic stop around 2 p.m. on the vehicle after reports of reckless driving, but the vehicle fled when officers attempted the stop. Shortly after the apprehension of both suspects, a second Portage resident notified police of a firearm that was discarded in their unlocked vehicle. The firearm was linked back to the two suspects.
Several charges are being sought against the the Florida woman, including fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing and being in possession of a controlled substance. The Vicksburg man is facing charges of resisting and obstructing, illegal entry and multiple weapons offenses.
