KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Michigan Department of Transportation is urging drivers to avoid westbound I-94, after a vehicle fire temporarily closed the highway near 9th Street, at mile marker 69.
We're told that the traffic backup could be stretching as far east as the US-131 exit.
Scanner traffic indicated that a semi truck was on fire near the Mattawan exit.
Witnesses tell us that a truck hauling cars caught fire, and that some of the cars are now on fire as well.
Crews are responding to the scene, but westbound I-94 was closed between 9th Street and approximately Mattawan for approximately a half hour. Around 7:30 a.m., the right lane of westbound traffic on I-94 was re-opened.
Drivers should still avoid the area if at all possible.
Newschannel 3 will continue to follow the story.
