Trader Joe's Kalamazoo announces Oct. 12 opening event

Kalamazoo's first Trader Joe's officially opens Oct. 12, with a public gathering that will include live music, food tastings, giveaways and a ceremonial lei cutting, company officials said in a written announcement on the event.

The 13,000-square-foot grocery will be the eighth Trader Joe's in Michigan and the second in western Michigan. A location opened in Grand Rapids in 2015.

The Kalamazoo store will feature murals that highlight Kalamazoo area landmarks, such as the river, Bronson Park and Waldo Stadium.

The Oct. 12 event begins at 7:55 a.m., with the store opening at 8 a.m.

Founded in 1958, Trader Joe's operates about 465 stores in 41 states.
