KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - With the first snowfall of the year upon us, it’s a good idea to make sure you have all the winter weather essentials packed in your car.

It’s also a good idea to brush up on your winter driving skills.

The mechanics at Woodwards Garage in Kalamazoo say they prep more than 1,000 cars for the winter months and say the first snowfall is when they see the most repairs from an accident.

They recommend checking the type of antifreeze you have in your car because the wrong kind could freeze and damage your engine. You can get a hydrometer tester to help with that.

"What it's gonna do is just pull the antifreeze out of the radiator. It goes in here, and then this float level tells you the protection of the antifreeze. Basically you want it around somewhere of 20 to 40, about 25, 30 below zero,” said John Rousseau, a mechanic at Woodwards Garage.

Police recommend having an ice scraper, as well as jumper cables with you at all times. Also before you head out, check the tire pressure, tread and alignment of your tires.

Officers also want to remind drivers to drive slower, leave plenty of space in front of you and leave yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going.

Woodwards adds that four-wheel drive can help, but that does not mean four-wheel stop. If it’s icy, you need more room to slow down.

They also say don't put off car repairs because of Christmas shopping. Getting your car checked now could save you money.
