Speak Out fundraiser to benefit woman trying to escape domestic violence
KALAMAZOO, Mich. —
Tonight, Kalamazoo will come together to help women trying escape domestic violence.
The Speak Out fundraiser is being held at the women's shelter at the Young Women’s Christian Association.
Sophia Putney-Wilcox co-founded the event three years ago. Her case became national news in 2014 when her ex-boyfriend threatened to kill her and set her on fire.
She got help from the YWCA.
Now, working with her childhood camp counselor, she is helping others going through similar situations.
"You don't have to necessarily talk about it yet,” Putney-Wilcox said. “That's fine, but it's good to be around other people that are going through what you've been through or you are still going through.”
The dinner tonight is at the YWCA in Kalamazoo from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
It's free to attend, but they ask you donate money for the shelter.
