Sock drive wraps up Tuesday, doubling the original 1,000-pair goal and reaching 2,008
After surpassing its original 1,000-pair goal, a West Michigan organization collecting socks for the needy doubled up: seeking 2,000 pair of socks by the Tuesday end of the drive.
They succeeded, too, collecting 2,008 pair of socks that were delivered to the Ministry with Community for distribution to the needy.
My Hemp Solutions in Kalamazoo hosted the sock drive challenge over the previous several weeks, quickly collecting the first 1,000 pair. That’s when they increased the goal to 2,000.
"Socks are the most needed item and least donated,” said Cassie Hatfield at My Hemp Solutions. “Maybe that would help lift their spirits and help them know that it's going to be OK. We're all here together to kind of get you through whatever battle it is that your facing, even if it is just a grungy old pair of socks."
As of a week ago, the drive had collected 1,500 pairs; donations were accepted until 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Organizers said sock donations are a simple gesture, but something that means much more than one might thing.
