Residents react to multiple robberies occurring overnight in Kalamazoo

The area of Porter Street where police say a 55-year-old man was robbed.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers are searching for suspects involved in two different armed robberies that happened within hours of each other.

The victims included a pizza delivery driver and a man walking on the sidewalk.

They appear to be isolated events, but police are on high alert.

At Drake's Pond apartment complex on the western edge of the Kalamazoo, many residents were surprised to learn that a pizza delivery man was robbed here at gun point last night.

“Nothing really happens here,” Mohammed Aljanahi, a resident at Drake’s Pond, said. “I'm really surprised to be honest.”

Just before midnight, KDPS says the delivery driver was approached by a man who pulled out a long-gun and demanded money.

A police K9 unit tried to track the suspect, who took off running and got away.

“I don't think it's someone who lives here,” Aljanahi said. “I doubt it, because they're all nice people here. It's a nice community.”

About two and a half hours earlier, police say a 55-year-old man walking on this sidewalk on Porter Street was approached by a man who said he had a gun.

“Yeah, you don't know, crazy people, give them your money,” John Crone of White Pigeon said. “Your life's worth a lot more.”

Police say the victim was ordered to get on the ground and was hit in the face before being robbed. The crime happened just feet from customer parking lots used for Bell's Brewery.

“Does this make you think differently going forward at all?” Crone asked. “No, we're still going to do this, still going to park here and go to Bell's.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
