Residents evacuated after Grand River floods in Portland

    The city of Portland announced just after midnight Wednesday morning, the Grand River in Ionia County flooded over its banks because of an ice jam, endangering local residents.

    About 50 residents were evacuated overnight and sent to temporary shelters, according to the city.

    Emergency officials reminded residents flood waters can rise very quickly, and those who live along the river were encouraged to monitor water levels and evacuate if water started to get closer to their home.

    The city of Portland and Ionia County officials were continuing to actively monitor the situation.
