Power outages affecting nearly 8k customers in Kalamazoo, Portage areas

    Just over 8,000 Consumers Energy customers were without power in Kalamazoo County as of 9:45 p.m. Sunday following outages near the southeast side of Kalamazoo and east side of Portage.

    The Consumers Energy outage map showed a total of 8,353 customers were affected county wide, with approximately 5,400 being left without power along Portage Street running south towards Portage. In addition, approximately 500 more customers were affected along the I-94 business loop running east towards Battle Creek.

    More customers were being affected in the Portage area, including areas surrounding Pavilion Township and others both west and east of Long Lake around the Indian Run Golf Club, located at 6359 Rs Ave E in Scotts.

    Debra Dodd with Consumers Energy said that as of Sunday night, power to approximately 1,800 customers has been restored after initial reports of 10,000 being without. The remaining customers being affected will have to wait as crews continue to find a cause for the outages. Dodd couldn't give an exact estimate as to when power would be restored.
