Portage mother of twins arrested on child abuse, felony murder in death of 5-month-old
A 21-year-old mother of twins was charged Tuesday with child abuse and felony murder, following an investigation into the death of one of her boys.
Jennifer Anne Mohler, of Portage, will soon be arraigned in Kalamazoo County District Court on two counts of child abuse in the first degree and one count of felony murder.
Neighbors said they remember seeing the little boy playing with his twin brother in a driveway. They say they looked happy and full of energy.
Her 5-month-old son died Feb. 13, 2018, just a couple weeks after emergency teams were called to the family home on Woodlawn Drive because the infant was suffering seizures. The baby boy was taken to Bronson Hospital where medical teams labeled the injuries and trauma he suffered as suspicious.
The issue was referred to Portage police detectives who later determined that the infant’s twin brother also exhibited signs of injury and trauma. The brother was then removed from the custody of his mother and placed in protective care.
Portaqe Police Lt. Joe McDonnell, in a written statement on the arrest, said an autopsy performed by the Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner's Office listed injuries of the head and neck as the cause of the death for the infant. The cause of death also was certified as a homicide.
According to documents from the Kalamazoo County Circuit Court, Mohler admitted to hitting the child with an eye glass container and tossing the little boy and his twin into portable crib.
Mohler is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.
