Pedestrian death under investigation after driver admits to running over a man in the road

Allegan County investigators are looking into the death of a 54-year-old man who was run over by a car in Ganges Township.

The driver of the car, an 18-year-old male, called police at 3:20 a.m. Thursday, explaining that he had just hit a pedestrian who was lying in the roadway. The man was on 66th Street near 119th Avenue, and was wearing dark clothing, investigators said.

The driver said he was traveling southbound on 66th Street when he encountered the man lying in the lane of travel. The driver said he was unable to avoid the man.

Deputies arriving at the scene found Robert Joe-Edward Cobb, 54, from Saugatuck, who had suffered severe injuries and had died at the scene.

The crash is under investigation by the Allegan County Sheriff's Office Accident Reconstruction Team. The sheriff's office was assisted by the Douglas Police Department, the Ganges Township Fire Department and Fennville AMR.
