Family and friends are calling on Kalamazoo County prosecutors to charge a drunk driver who killed a Western Michigan University student five months ago.

19-year-old Bailey Broderick was hit and killed by a drunk driver on Nov. 3, 2021, according to investigators.

Police said the driver was a 19-year-old man who was intoxicated and speeding. Charges have not yet been filed against the driver.

"It was all those choices that brought him to killing our daughter and we want justice for her and think that she deserves it," Bailey's mother Colleen Broderick said. "We think that this boy should pay for the choices that he made.”

Bailey's parents said Kalamazoo County prosecutors initially told them it could take awhile to bring charges against the driver because they wanted to rack up as many charges against him as they could.

Now, prosecutors said the driver might only be facing a misdemeanor.

“I just know that a misdemeanor is not justice in this example," Colleen said. "I thought in the state of Michigan that underage drinking wasn't tolerated and that drinking and driving wasn’t tolerated.”

Family and friends said they will no stop fighting for justice.

Bailey's parents are left to remember the life of their only daughter.

“I sure do miss that girl," Bailey's father Craig Broderick said. "She touched a lot of people's lives.”

The Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office said they are still considering a number of charges against the driver.
