Old Hardings Market building in Kalamazoo getting a facelift

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The old Hardings Market building in Kalamazoo is getting a facelift years in the making.

The Shoppes on Westnedge is moving into the empty building on Howard Street, just south of downtown.

The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority approved a $9.4 million project Thursday morning.

The developers, who own the Park Street Market, plan to reshape the empty building, calling it an urban grocery store for the neighborhood.

Planners expect the new shops to open up in the next two years.

The City of Kalamazoo, and developers also plan to use the additional parking lot space for a farmers market and food trucks.

"What they're going to do is put in a grocery store which is going to be an anchor, they're going to have four other areas in here that they're going to bring in other businesses," said Assistant City Manager Jerome Kisscorni.

Planners expect the new shops to open up in the next two years.

The project is expected to create more than a hundred jobs.
