Construction was underway on new, affordable housing in Kalamazoo’s Edison neighborhood.

The new facility will be on Portage Street in Kalamazoo and once the project is done it will be home to almost 50 families.

“2007-2008 it had turned into a blighted property. There was a lot of crime going on in the building and the Kalamazoo land bank end up tearing it down and what they wanted from that time all the way up to now was a project like this. We are for filling desires that were expressed by the neighborhood almost 10 years ago,’ said Hollander Development President Matthew Hollander.

The facility will be over 10,000 square feet and host a 24-hour child drop-in service for families who need a little extra help.

Hollander said there are very limited options for affordable housing in Kalamazoo.

The goal of breaking ground today is a major milestone in the city.

The project is expected to last take 16 to 18 months and crews will start prepping the area for construction in the beginning of July.
