Kalamazoo murder suspect Donnovan Lewis sentenced to jail for escape

A Kalamazoo man awaiting trial on a murder charge was sentenced Monday to 17 months to four years in jail after he pleaded guilty to escaping from the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Donnovan Lewis pleaded guilty to the escape charge in January,

It was Sept. 19, 2018, when he gained a half hour's freedom after escaping over the fences at the Kalamazoo County Jail. Security and dash cam video show Lewis scaling the two wire fences at the jail, then running through nearby neighborhoods. He was captured by authorities about 30 minutes later.

Lewis was awaiting trial on the murder charge when he escaped. In that case, investigators accuse Lewis of killing Western Michigan University student Aniya Mack and dumping her body in a Comstock Township stream.

On Monday, Lewis told the judge that his family was receiving threats.

He is still awaiting trial on the murder charge.
