A group in West Michigan has been accused of planning to kidnap a child at random from a county fair and then torture and murder the child.

Matthew Toole, Battle Creek, Talia Furman, Springfield, Jayme LaPointe, Athens, and David Bailey, Coldwater, face multiple charges connected with a child porn ring and abduction plan.

"These are the worst of the worst people." Michigan State Police Detective Sgt. Gerald Yott said, “We like to think that this can't happen here, and it does. It happens here all the time."

Yott leads the team investigating the case and is responsible for getting the four off the streets - putting aside their own emotions to do the job.

He said, "This is one of the most heinous groups of monsters that we've dealt with."

Families enjoyed the Saint Joseph County Fair. No worries, children with smiles on their faces, but the picturesque evening, drenched in neon light, could easily be swallowed by darkness.

Jill Sebo, Three Rivers, said, "It makes me sick. It really makes me sick that the things that are going on today. I don't understand. I really don't."

Many people at the St. Joseph County Fair have heard of the arrests, the charges, and the nefarious alleged scheme to harm a child - any child - in what investigators said is the most heinous, evil way imaginable.

A plot to kidnap, torture, rape and murder. Too much for some parents to even begin to fathom.

Crone "We were out here three times this week and you always see kids running around by themselves and you know they can easily be snatched up. It's a sad world we live in that somebody would want to snatch up a kid."

Michigan State Police said the four facing charges are expected to be arraigned Monday.

Calhoun County Prosecutors also allege that Toole and Furman tried to lure a 12-year-old out of a county fair and take the child up north.

The couple is also accused of molesting a 3-year-old.

MSP detectives have been investigating the child porn ring after a tip led them to LaPointe, 19, and they said they uncovered chat messages and videos of sexually abusive material.

LaPointe is accused of molesting a 1-year-old she was babysitting and will head to trial.

Sebo "Those poor children. I don't understand. I don't understand."
