SCOTTS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A driver is dead after driving off the road and hitting a tree near Scotts, according to Kalamazoo County Undersheriff James VanDyken.

The crash happened near the intersection of South 29th Street and R Avenue East in Pavililion Township Sunday evening. The driver of the Hummer, who neighbors said is a man, was on the wrong side of the road when he hit the tree.

Officials confirm the victim was the only person involved in the one-car crash.

Pete Notebool, a resident in the area where the crash took place, said he responded after hearing the crash. By the time he arrived, he said there was nothing he could do.

"It was down the ditch, so I got out there, saw what was going on, ran up to the car, saw a guy hunched over the wheel and then tried to help best I could," Notebool said. "[I] tried to feel his pulse on my arm, couldn't feel anything."

The identity of the victim will not be released by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office until family is notified.
