LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Attorney General is expected to conduct an extensive review into the actions of the Ottawa County Commission, a spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.
The office is expected to investigate the Jan. 3 board meeting where the commission abruptly fired its former administrator John Shay and hired former Republican congressional candidate John Gibbs to fill the position.
"AG Dana Nessel is committed to defending the Open Meetings Act and recognizes the importance of ensuring that the people’s business allows residents to participate in their government and that local and county governments operate in accordance with the established law," the spokesperson said in a comment.
The commission did not originally have the moves on the agenda for discussion, but it was added by a 6-3 vote. The resolution was also passed by the same vote.
Hillary Scholten defeated Gibbs in the Nov. 8 election, becoming the first Democrat since the mid-1970s to represent the state's second-largest city of Grand Rapids.
