GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer announced Thursday it plans to extend its 15% discount on classroom essentials for teachers.
With students back in the classroom, teachers spent more money than ever on supplies.
The annual discount was extended for the entire 2021-2022 school year.
The average teacher spent about $750 of their own money on school supplies while 30% of teachers spent about $1,000 or more, according to AdoptAClassroom.org.
The classroom supply budget is not enough to meet their students' needs this year, reported 95% of teachers.
Meijer wanted to make this spending a bit easier on teachers by extending their annual discount.
"We understand the need for teachers to restock the essentials is especially great as they return to classroom learning and face the potential changes this year may bring. Our goal is to help teachers in communities across the Midwest shop with confidence whenever they need to refill supplies," Meijer Back-to-School Merchandising Director May Graceffa said.
The discount is anticipated to offer savings on home office supplies like paper, pencils, folder and journals.
Other items included in the discount are essentials like Crayola, Elmer's Glue, Sharpies and Post-It Notes.
Teachers can also stack their mPerks Rewards with their discount.
To receive the discount, teachers are presented with a paper coupon after presenting their current school ID at the customer service desk at all Meijer stores in Michigan, Ohio ,Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
The coupon can only be used for in-store purchases.
“Flexibility is more important than ever as teachers consider the number of supplies required for the new school year, so helping reduce stress on their pocketbooks any time their classrooms run low on essential items is top of mind for us,” Graceffa said.
