Man charged with killing girlfriend recaptured after brief escape from Kalamazoo jail
UPDATE: Police report that Donnovan Lewis has been taken into custody, and no one was hurt.
Shortly after reviving reports that Lewis had been seen near Maple and Burdick streets, he was re-captured in the area of Portage Road and Bryant Street, southeast of downtown Kalamazoo. The intersection is about three miles from the Kalamazoo County Jail, where Lewis reportedly climbed over two fences to escape custody. He was re-captured about 30 minutes after escaping.
Lewis is scheduled to go to trial on the murder charges on Sept. 25, 2018.
He was on recreational time, out in the jail yard, when he jumped the fences. Kalamazoo County Undersheriff James VanDyken said jail officials immediately notified his department as well as the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and township officials.
VanDyken also said that the department was working on issuing a red alert when Lewis was found.
The last time someone escaped from the Kalamazoo County Jail was in the 1970's. VanDyken said it's a very rare incident, and the department is now investigating the fences.
Kalamazoo Public Schools said police were in touch with school administrators and that Edison school was locked down for a short time during the manhunt.
