Local artist enters ArtPrize for the first time

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - We are now about 2 1/2 weeks away from the official start of ArtPrize 2016.

More than 1,600 artists will be featured in 170 different venues across Grand Rapids.

Art of all kinds will be on display later this month from artists from all around the world, but tonight we want to spotlight a local artist, who is entering ArtPrize for the first time.

"You're jumping off the diving board and you don't know if you're going to succeed you know," said artist Michelle Curry, from Gobles.

Curry delicately places green leaves on a large watercolor she's been working on for months.

Right to the side, sits a finished product. Her first ever ArtPrize entry: "Love the Giraffe."

"I spent a couple of weeks actually just doing the blue sky," she said.

Love is a 4 foot by 4 foot oil painting Curry started in October of last year, and finished in April of this year.

"My favorite part is like right through here," she said, giving us a closer look at the piece.

Curry says she worked about 20 hours a week to make it perfect.

"I studied the skeletal structure, I studied the fur, I studied the coloring," she said. "I studied how that coloring changes overnight."

Curry is proud to be representing southwest Michigan in ArtPrize 2016, and she knows she's in great company.

"I feel like I'm in the Olympics for artists," she said.

Whether or not she makes it into the top 10, she hopes Love connects with all who see her.

"I want them to have a face-to-face meeting with Love. I want them to fall in love with her," she said.
