Lansing man drowns at private campground in Ionia County
ORANGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. —
He was there with friends to go fishing, but about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, a Lansing man died after he fell into a lake at a privately operated campground.
The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office and medical first responders were sent to the Lakeside Resort and Campground, a privately owned campground in the 700 block of E. Grand River Avenue of Orange Township, after receiving reports that a man had been found in the water and was not breathing.
Deputies were told that bystanders had removed the manfrom the water and began giving him cardiopulmonary resuscitation. when the emergency responders arrived, lifesaving efforts continued for some time until the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Pedro Lira, 47 of Lansing Michigan.
Investigators at the scene revealed that Lira had been at the campground to fish with a friend when he reportedly fell into the lake. A group of young children a few docks down from where Lira was fishing saw he was in distress and ran to the campground office to report the drowning. Campground staff contacted 911 and began lifesaving attempts. Deputies said there might have been a pre-existing medical condition that caused Lira to go into medical distress and fall into the water.
This incident remains under investigation by the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office and the Ionia County Medical Examiner.
Crews working and responding to this incident included the Ionia County Central Dispatch, Berlin-Orange Fire, LIFE EMS, and Lehman Funeral Homes.
