Kalamazoo volunteers make a difference on National Serve Day

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Hundreds of volunteers in West Michigan rolled up their sleeves for a day of service Saturday.

The New Life Church in Mattawan said they took their ministry to the community, to join others in a nationwide Serve Day.

Local volunteers picked up trash, built a new porch, among other helpful tasks for members of the community across Kalamazoo County.

Serve Day is part of a nationwide effort by Christian churches to improve their local communities.

Pastor Dan Smith, from New Life Church, said the day is all about volunteering their time and talents to bring hope and joy to those who need it most. He told Newschannel 3's Jake Berent, instead of doing things to tear people apart, they are hoping to help put people and their lives back together.

"When we started our church less than two years ago, we wanted to be a church that just blessed the city," said Smith. "We wanted to be known for generosity. We wanted to be known for helping people."
