Kalamazoo Public Safety looks to hire new officers to benefit the community
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) has opened up applications to find new officers they hope will help the community.
The hiring process is now open and will run through May 29th. You can fill out an application online.
Chief Karianne Thomas said the department is looking for service-minded people who want to help the community.
After applying, the first step is a written test. Once accepted, applicants will complete 14 weeks of paid training covering police academy, fire academy and medical first responder training.
"We're looking for the right people. We can train people to do this job so we're looking for people who have a heart for service for this,” Thomas said. “We always say we can train the brain and hire the heart because we're just looking for the right people and we're provide you all the training."
"If you've always had that passion to want to work in law enforcement, but maybe life took you in a different direction, now is the time to do it," said Lieutenant Matt Elzinga, with KDPS. "We have a lot of people that came from other places of employment."
KDPS said they are working to increase staff levels after previous cuts and a number of retirements. They said many applicants apply multiple times before they get hired.
