Kalamazoo native Jordan Klepper talks hosting on Comedy Central
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan man makes it big on Comedy Central.
Newschannel 3's Jessica Wheeler had a chance to talk to Jordan Klepper about his show and how his time in Kalamazoo helped pave the way to his dream job.
Klepper hosts a news satire program that spoofs alternative news media and takes shots at the very unpredictable events and politics of the day. But before he had a nightly spot on cable TV, he was a Kalamazoo boy with big dreams.
"I was born and raised in good old Kalamazoo. My parents are still there. And I went to Kalamazoo college,” said Klepper.
Klepper is the star of "The Opposition with Jordan Klepper,” a Comedy Central show that kicked off last September.
He got his creative start with the mock trial team at Kalamazoo Central High School and doing improv at Kalamazoo College.
"It was such a nurturing place to grow up. And my parents were the kind of parents that supported me with everything I did,” said Klepper.
His first big break came on the “Daily Show.”
"Worked at the Daily Show for three years and that was a dream come true and I got to get my second dream come true and have my own show,” said Klepper.
His own show feeds off our current political climate.
"I was like I kind of want to build a show through a character that sort of lives in a fringy world that sees conspiracies everywhere that's anti-mainstream, that bucks reality and creates its own, is full of culture wars,” said Klepper.
Klepper says he never lacks material.
"We see this partisan divide that runs through every single news story and culture wars that happen on the smallest little thing,” said Klepper.
As for West Michigan students who want to follow their own dreams, Klepper has some advice.
"That young K Central student or that student over there at Norrix I think -- try things. See what feels right to you and keep searching that thing out because eventually you'll find that thing that feels right,” said Klepper.
"The Opposition with Jordan Klepper" airs weeknights at 10:30 p.m. on Comedy Central.
