KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Friday the mayor of Kalamazoo is one of the 11 new members appointed to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation Executive Committee, per a statement released from her office.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell was first elected to the Kalamazoo city council in 2003 and began his first stint as mayor in 2007, currently serving a term lasting through April 2020. Hopewell recently announced he will not seek re-election at the conclusion of his current term.
“The MEDC is a tremendous partner in our mission to build a stronger economy and create more good-paying jobs across the state,” Whitmer said in a statement. “These leaders all understand that if we want to help our businesses compete and make Michigan a home for opportunity, then we need to get serious about attracting a talented workforce and improving our infrastructure. It’s time to get to work and get it done.”
Additionally from the West Michigan community are Krista Flynn, regional president of Chemical Bank out of Ada, Michigan and Bill Pink, president of Grand Rapids Community College out of Ada, as well.
The MEDC is described a collaborative effort comprised of over 100 economic development partners that "market Michigan as the place to do business, assists businesses in their growth strategies, and foster the growth of vibrant communities across the state," per the statement from Whitmer.
