KALAMAZOO, Mich. — As Juneteenth celebrations drew crowds in Kalamazoo, entrepreneur Daniel J May, who was one of the first to celebrate the holiday in the city, announces the summer 2022 opening of Dabney & Co. the only Black-owned and operated cocktail lounge.
Continuing his original and bold commemoration for the day which signifies liberation, May said his latest business venture pays homage to Black mixologists and service staff, “Liberation Through Spirits.”
The business sits in the heart of the Kalamazoo on N Rose St and W Kalamazoo Ave. The menu includes fresh, hand-crafted beverages and savory, classic soul foods with a unique spin served as small plates.
Although intent on the liberation of Black people and the cultural history of Black people, May is opening his doors for everyone to experience the culture, showcasing live entertainment from soul musicians.
“The diverse community that makes up Kalamazoo and the good, honest souls I’ve met in the last 13 years of living here assure me this is the perfect city to launch an experience,” said May.
May is anticipating keeping the richness of Black history alive through his establishment, even down to the company name Dabney & Co. which honors a once-enslaved John Dabney, the first renowned Black bartender who was credited with crafting “hail-storm” mint juleps.
“What feels most satisfying is the excitement growing within the community for this project," said May. "As I go through the process of establishing the business each time I share this story, my story, the genuine support grows just as great as the eagerness.”
