Ground breaking ceremony held for new senior center in Portage

A new center is coming to Portage that focuses on senior citizens.

Charles and Lynn Zhang of Zhang Financial helped fund the new center by donating $2 million and describe new facility as "the living room of the community."

Portage city officials, Portage Senior Center staff, Portage council members, and the Zhang family broke ground Thursday Sept, 24, 2020, on the site of the future center along East Centre Avenue in Portage.

Charles and Lynn said the new 36,000 square foot building will be modern, innovative and four times the size of the current Portage senior center.

The extra space will accommodate expanded activities for senior citizens. With also being open and available for everyone in the community for recreational activities and programs.

“Zhang Financial is deeply rooted in this community. When we commit to you, we commit to this community and we will do everything we can to help make this a better place for everyone to live” Lynn Zhang, Zhang Financial, said.

The new senior center will cost a total of $11 million and rest coming from the city and other donors.
