Grand Rapids resident Jared James Chance, 29, was charged Tuesday with mutilating, concealing a body in a case that could be linked to a missing Kalamazoo woman.

Investigators are still trying to identify the victim whose body was found Sunday at a residence in the 900 block of Franklin Street S.E. in Grand Rapids. The condition of the body has made positive identification difficult, police said.

Chance, who was taken into custody after the body was found, was charged Tuesday with mutilation of a dead body, a felony punishable by a maximum of 10 years in prison and/or $5,000 fine, and one count of concealing the death of an individual, a felony with a 5 year maximum jail sentence and up to $5,000 in fines.

Grand Rapids Police Detectives said the call came in shortly before 4:30 p.m. Dec. 2, 2018, regarding a suspicion of foul play at a residence. After obtaining a search warrant, the two-unit building was searched.
