KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Dozens of piano students from first grade to 12th grade, received a valuable experience Saturday, receiving one-on-one feedback from clinicians and performers.
The Epic Center in downtown Kalamazoo hosted the Gilmore Keysfest, which is an annual learning event for piano students.
These students took turns performing in front of a small audience, received immediate feedback and learned from fellow performers during the event.
The students were also invited to attend workshops, participate in sight readings, and collaborate with other piano students, according to event organizers.
"This is a valuable opportunity because master classes are typically a collegiate experience," The Gilmore's Education and Community Engagement Manager, Leslie Baron said.
A former Gilmore Education Fellow and Western Michigan University graduate, Molly Sandford, performed in a free concert to inspire students in their musical journey.
"Teaching young students is especially meaningful to me, because I get to watch them discover music for the first time," Sandford said. "One of my favorite moments as a teacher is when a student hears a difference in their playing, or suddenly understands where they can improve musically, and is motivated to work towards a goal."
The performance was also livestreamed online.
