Former WMU basketball coach recalls chance encounter with George H.W. Bush
KALAMAZOO, Mich. —
George H.W. Bush spoke at Western Michigan University one night while running for re-election as Vice President alongside President Ronald Reagan, but what he did just hours before that speech still has people talking.
Bush was running some laps at the old Read Fieldhouse on campus when he literally ran into the WMU Women's basketball team.
Former WMU Woman’s Basketball coach Jim Hess said, "He could not have been any nicer and probably what impressed me the most was just his genuine humility and it was more like he was glad to meet us."
The white house photographer took a photo of Bush with the team and Hess said it was an incredible moment he and his former team will never forget.
He said his team also won the MAC Championship that year. That paired with meeting the Vice President just a few months later made 1984 one of the most memorable years of his life.
