Former KZOO County commissioner, GOP activist dies after struck by truck

The Kalamazoo County GOP is reporting longtime conservative activist Jerome Kohel has passed away after he was struck by a vehicle in Comstock Township on Sunday, Aug. 12. He was 74.

The GOP said in a release that the former Kalamazoo County Commissioner passed away on Friday, Aug. 17 at Borgess Hospital. Kohel was walking alongside his wife, Elizabeth, near the intersection of Gull Road and Gull Run Drive in Comstock Township when he was struck by a truck driven by a 27-year-old Kalamazoo man.

Funeral services for Kohel will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church in Augusta.

The accident is still currently under investigation.
