KALAMAZOO — Firefighters battled a fire and the bitter cold at a house fire in Kalamazoo on Tuesday night.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety arrived at a house in the Edison neighborhood near the intersection of Stockbridge Avenue and Fulford Street at 8:30 p.m Tuesday.
Fire crews said they had difficulty extinguishing the flames due to frozen water lines in the nearest hydrant. They had to hook up to a hydrant farther from the scene that was not frozen.
The department had to call in another truck because a component on the first one froze.
Due to the subzero temperatures, fire crews rotated shifts every ten to 15 minutes, taking turns warming up in a Kalamazoo City Metro Bus on the scene.
The department has a designated safety officer who checks on every firefighter on scene, to make sure they don’t get frostbite or overexert themselves.
