The murder trial for Donnovan Lewis, accused of killing his girlfriend Aniya Mack, has been postponed for a month as authorities await completion of a competency examination.
Originally scheduled to start Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, the trial is now set for Oct. 25.
Lewis' defense attorneys filed an order in August seeking that exam. The Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's office has said that the defense seems to be setting the stage for an insanity defense.
Lewis is accused of stabbing Mack, 24, and slitting her throat before dumping her body in a Kalamazoo creek on Thursday, June 28, 2018.
Her body was recovered from the creek off East Main Street near 26th Street in Comstock Township. Police said Lewis gave them valuable information that led them to Mack's body.
