Doctors issue warning as temperatures rise, cooling centers open

The intense heat has local doctors warning you to be careful Thursday.

WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The intense heat has local doctors warning you to be careful Thursday.

As bad as Wednesday was, it was just the start of the extreme heat that will grip West Michigan for the next few days.

Local organizations are ready to help. The Douglass Community Association in Kalamazoo says they're on stand-by, ready to open their cooling center Thursday and Friday for those without air conditioning.

Mt. Zion Baptist Church on 120 Roberson St. in Kalamazoo is opening a cooling center from 12 pm to 8 pm on Thursday and 12 pm to 6 pm Friday.

We also spoke with local doctors who tell us when it gets this hot and humid, fans just don't work and you need to know when it's time to go somewhere with air conditioning to take a break.

They say local emergency rooms are preparing to take on extra people this week because of the heat wave.

They also recommend keeping an eye on kids and the elderly. They're susceptible to the heat first.

And they tell us if you have to be outside, start drinking water early to stay ahead of dehydration.

"Always staying ahead of it. Don't wait until you're thirsty. Always be maintaining hydration, wearing loose fitting clothes, light colored clothes and knowing when it's time to get inside," said Dr. William Tressel at Borgess.

West Michigan United Way's 2-1-1 program is also ready to assist people in need in this heat. Those who need fans and help with cooling centers can call 2-1-1 for help.

The South Haven Health System’s Wellness Center will be opening its doors from Wednesday to Sunday for people to escape the heat. The air-conditioned lobby and public conference rooms will be available and they will also have cold water on hand.

Several cooling centers are also being opened in Calhoun County. They are:

  • Lakeview Square Mall - Normal Business Hours
  • Salvation Army - 400 Capital Avenue NE - Thursday and Friday - Noon until 8:00 pm.
  • Community House - 104 Calhoun Street - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday - 1:00 pm until 9:00 pm.
