Crews respond to fatal fire in Battle Creek

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - First responders are on the scene of a fatal fire in Battle Creek at this hour.

It started Monday evening, in the 200 block of East Michigan, near Elm Street.

We're told the fire is largely under control, but that one person is dead.

Right now, the victim is being identified as a male, but there are no further indications as to his identity.

Fire officials say the blaze began sometime around 6:00 Monday evening.

A friend of the victim tells us the house was reportedly unoccupied, and that the victim was working on the house, in an effort to fix it up.
